Commons Podcasts:
Frequently Asked Questions
So what is a podcast?
Podcasting is a method of publishing audio and video files, graphics, and even PDFs to the internet and making them available for subscription-based download to a computer or mp3 player.
The defining feature of podcasting is the "subscription" model of content delivery. Using iTunes (or another RSS feed aggregator) on a Mac or PC, you can "subscribe" to a podcaster's site. Then, you can customize the settings in iTunes (or your RSS aggregator) to download new episodes every time the aggregator connects to the internet. Instead of having to go check multiple sites for new content, new content is brought to you.
Do I need to have an iPod to listen to (or watch) a podcast?
No. Almost any Mac or PC can play audio or video podcasts, provided you download an appropriate (and usually free) playback software (we recommend iTunes for both Mac and PC). In addition, most portable mp3 players will play audio podcasts, since the preferred method of distributing audio podcasts is by providing them in the mp3 or m4a file format. Viewing video podcasts on a portable player will require a video iPod or portable video player that supports the m4v, mov, or mp4 video file types, since it is possible to produce video podcasts in any of these formats.
